This is an unusual approach to training but worked for Coe. Boyer Coe talks about why the 2nd Colorado Experiment failed, why the Nautilus System didn't work for Bodybuilders and how Arthur Jones tried to blame him for it. That was a huge stepping-stone for him. He started training where he was born and won Mr. Texas and then Mr. Dallas in 1965, Mr. America in 1969 then NABBA Mr. Universe in 1972, World Cup in 1981 as well as many other top bodybuilding titles. [ Q ] Who else do you admire in bodybuilding? [ Q ] But clearly you were one of the best in your era and you did make a great contribution to bodybuilding. I managed to do that several months before I graduated. Only one voted in favor. The $5,000 Cooke was carrying the night of. [ Q ] What qualities did Sergio have that made him superior in your view? . Just how relevant is he in bodybuilding today in your view? And way back in the IFBB, the way you got to be a judge was to first be distributor for Weider food supplements. Exactly, and you see Joe was never really aware of what was happening. Every hour on the hour the chimes would go off and wake me up. Too much muscle is as harmful as too much fat, Do you know how much money sports generate? I said, "We can't change the rules, we have already voted on them." But he didn't understand bodybuilding and he didn't have the right people around him, telling him how to do bodybuilding. I remember I was about 16 when I realized I could make my biceps split while doing a pose. Now that is a very mysterious question that has never really been fully answered. [ Q ] Having competed against some of the greatest champions of all time, who stands out as being the consummate professional? What we would do is ask one of the guests we had on, what they would like to train for that day. Never understood that! I didn't compete against him the first time I met him but the first time we were onstage together was in 1969. As a matter of fact, the guys I always admired were Bill Pearl and Sergio Oliva. I will give him credit for one thing though: he already knew the outcome before he ever set foot in Australia. So I went to the 1967 Mr. America and I decided to take his advice and did not do a chest pose. Who among your fellow competitors did you admire most and why? He rolled up his shirtsleeve and sure enough he could do the same thing. And he said no, he never did. Then he had enormous wrists and elbows, which made his arms appear even bigger. All he ever said was that it was unfair for Arnold to win. Coes nutrition was simple. They have HGH and insulin available to them and I am sure that accounts for a lot of the extra muscle mass. My greatest moments were of a personal nature. But I'm of the opinion that you cannot change people's minds. When he passed away three-years-ago, I took over to keep his business going. And this was way before anabolic steroids were used. Well, it certainly wasn't winning a contest. There were so many: Bill Pearl and Sergio Oliva inspired me so much. To me that was the Oscar of bodybuilding. In 1994 Boyer competed at his all time best bodyweight of 224 pounds, at 5'9", to place third in the Masters Mr. Olympia. The only difference between the 1980 and the 1981 Mr. Olympia was very little was written about the 1981, then and ever since. His office and desk was always a mess, but she knew where everything was at and was able to keep the whole operation running smoothly. I guess it got back to Franco and he even called me and said, "Why did you say that." Funny story about this contest: since there was only $25,000 involved as prize money and no one was really doing it for the money, I suggested that, whomever the winner might be, why not give all the prize money to the him. I have always believed in complete range of motion in all exercises, full contraction and full extension. I see a lot of guys doing partial reps and really using a lot of momentum in their exercises their joints just wont last doing it this way..
